About Wesley W. Whitmyer
Wesley W. Whitmyer Jr. is a patent lawyer who combines trial experience with federal and administrative practice. He earned a B.A. in physics from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1985 and a J.D. from Ohio State University in 1988. Those technical and legal foundations inform his work on patent matters and appellate problems.
He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and holds admission to the U.S. highest court. His federal admissions consist of the U.S. Court of Appeals, which includes the Federal Circuit, and numerous U.S. District Courts, amongst them the District of Connecticut. He is also admitted to practice in Connecticut.
Whitmyer has mixed personal practice and coaching. He joined the Whitmyer IP Group and has served in a managing position there since 2015. In 2019 he served as a part-time law professor on the University of Connecticut School of Law, bringing realistic point of view into the classroom. In 2022 he took at the presidency of State Street Debating Society Ltd., a position that added organizational management to his resume.
His practice spans patent prosecution earlier than the USPTO and litigation in federal court. He files and defends patent claims, handles appeals on the Federal Circuit degree and addresses complicated procedural and substantive patent problems. His club in expert organizations reflects the breadth of his professional interests: Connecticut Patent Law Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, the New York Intellectual Property Law Association, the International Federation of Intellectual Property Lawyers, and the European Communities Trademark Association.
Clients and colleagues notice a capacity to move among technical detail and legal argument. He draws on a physics background when parsing patent specs, and on appellate knowledge when framing problems for review. He continues to practice at Whitmyer IP Group, the place his work facilities on patent litigation and prosecution.
