About Matthew S.

Matthew S. Lerner earned his undergraduate degree in 1996 and his law degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1999. He began his legal training at a statewide degree soon after finishing law program. The academic document set the stage for work in appellate and trial-oriented settings early in his career.

He joined the New York Court of Appeals as a court lawyer in 1999. That position put him inside the state’s Supreme Court during the youth of his practice. In 2003 he moved into personal practice and have become a companion at Goldberg Segalla LLP. He has remained at that company since, taking over legal proceedings and appellate duties that draw on both his courtroom-aspect knowledge and his later defense work.

Mr. Lerner is admitted to practice in New York and is authorized to seem before multiple federal courts in the state. His federal admissions include the Southern, Eastern and Northern Districts of New York. He has also been active in expert organizations that reflect his areas of practice. Since 2005 he has been a member of the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. Beginning in 2004 he joined the Defense Research Institute and has served on the steerage committees for the Young Lawyers Committee and the Appellate Advocacy Committee. Those positions have him engaged in continuing education and committee work on civil protection strategy and appellate process.

Colleagues describe his trail as one that moved from appellate clerkship to company partnership in a comparatively short span. The transition allowed him to mix appellate insight with on-the-floor litigation. Over time his caseload has included things that intersect with tort and coverage issues in addition to appellate briefing and argument. He is a continuous presence at his company and amongst the expert teams that cope with insurance defense and appeals practice.

Today he is a partner at Goldberg Segalla LLP, the place he handles legal proceedings and appellate things springing up under New York regulation and in numerous federal districts. His practice concentrates on tort and insurance defense and appellate work.
