About Mariah America

Mariah America Gleaton took an unusual trail to the law. She studied biology on the University of Maine, Orono, and earned a B.S. in 2010. A few years later she finished a J.D. on the University of Connecticut School of Law in 2014. Those educational choices left her with a mix of scientific training and legal education.

After law school she returned to Maine and established herself within the local legal community. She is certified to practice in Maine and has been active in civic organizations in the Waterville region since 2014. Her memberships in the Waterville Rotary Club and the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce mirror a curiosity in network ties in addition to professional networks.

Gleaton’s early career mixed court work and client advising. She spent time handling civil things and representing clients in municipal contexts. Colleagues describe her as pragmatic in court and direct in client meetings. She favors jargon-free explanations over legal jargon. Her background in biology sometimes informs cases that contact on environmental or medical issues, giving her a diverse frame of reference than many general practitioners.

Her approach to cases is methodical. She prepares very well for hearings and values careful factual research. Clients and other lawyers working together with her note an emphasis on practical outcomes. She moves between negotiation and litigation when conditions require it. That flexibility has been a hallmark of her practice since she began practicing in Maine.

Outside the office she has maintained continuous involvement in local organizations. Since 2014 she has been a member of the Waterville Rotary Club and the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce, collaborating in local occasions and network projects. Those memberships have kept her connected to business leaders and civic volunteers across central Maine.

Gleaton is based at O Donnell Lee McCowan Phillips, LLC, where she works along other lawyers within the firm’s Maine workplace. Her work combines client counseling, court appearances, and community engagement. She is currently in personal practice at O Donnell Lee McCowan Phillips, LLC, where she focuses on legal issues for clients in Maine.
