Robin L Schmid grew up studying structures of regulation and society. She earned a B.S. in criminal justice, sociology and political science from Western Michigan University in 1984 and took her Juris Doctor at Michigan State University, receiving her J.D. in 1989. Those credentials set the stage for a career spent in large part in Alaska however spanning state and federal courts.

Her early expert lifestyles included a stint in academia. In 1993 she served as a part-time law professor on the University of Alaska, Anchorage, teaching courses that drew on her grounding in felony justice.
