Matthew A. Schwartz entered regulation from a background in politics and liberal arts. He earned an A.B. in politics from Princeton University in 2000, after beginning his undergraduate work in 1996. He continued his research at Columbia Law School, receiving his J.D. in 2003. Those educational years shaped an early interest in the intersection of public institutions and private practice.

Schwartz started his legal career within the federal courts. After law program he served as a regulation clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 2003.
