About Mark
Mark Thompson came to law from an unlikely start line: a liberal arts university degree in computer science. He earned a B.A. from Luther College in 1997, then returned to school for a J.D. on the University of Iowa, graduating in 2001. The aggregate of technical training and formal law school training formed a pragmatic strategy to hassle fixing early in his professional life.
He joined the Iowa legal community in the early 2000s and became a member of the Iowa State Bar in 2004. That club has been non-stop. In the years that followed he moved among courtroom work and tasks that paired judicial procedure with community programs. In 2010 he served as criminal defense lawyer for the Johnson County Drug Treatment Court, taking on cases that intersected felony things and rehabilitative services.
Thompson’s peers recognized his interest in professional improvement and moral practice. He joined the Dean Mason Ladd American Inn of Court in 2005 and served in officer roles, including Treasurer and Secretary in 2012. He held the Inn’s Barrister designation through 2021, collaborating in programs intended to refine court technique and mentor more recent lawyers.
In 2016 Thompson used to be appointed a magistrate judge at the Iowa Judicial Branch. The position shifted his day-to-day duties from advocacy to adjudication. As a magistrate, he has overseen initial things, small claims and other hearings commonly assigned to the magistrate bench. The role required balancing case law and local courtroom procedures whilst managing a continuous docket.

He is comfortable explaining rulings in plain phrases and making use of statutory frameworks to routine disputes. His background in pc science typically informs how he strategies document-heavy matters and evidence that gifts technical issues.
Thompson continues to practice in Iowa’s courts. He remains lively in bar activities and court packages and applies his courtroom experience to the magistrate judge duties he used to be chosen to perform in 2016. He currently focuses his practice on judicial duties and things arising in the state’s magistrate courts.
