James W. Martens trained in the Upper Midwest. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Concordia College–Moorhead and went directly to obtain his law degree from the University of North Dakota School of Law. He remained within the region after faculty and constructed a tradition rooted in nearby institutions and expert networks.
