About Derek

Derek Miller built his legal foundations at Rutgers. He earned a B.A. in History and Political Science at Rutgers University — New Brunswick/Piscataway in 2004, then persisted his studies at Rutgers School of Law–Camden, receiving his J.D. in 2010. Those years gave him a continuous grounding in constitutional and statutory frameworks. He moved from the classroom into public service soon after graduation.

He began his career in state government in 2010, joining the New Jersey Office of the Lawyer General as a deputy lawyer common. The position positioned him in the middle of state legal work, dealing with things on behalf of public agencies and dealing along senior counsel on legal proceedings and advisory assignments. That early exposure to the mechanics of state regulation and administrative practice formed the manner he approaches legal problems.

Since 2010 he has maintained lively expert memberships. Colleagues describe him as methodical in his preparation and pragmatic in courtroom. He spent those formative expert years studying how to manage complicated files, draft pleadings and motions, and advise clients on regulatory problems. His time in government additionally offered frequent contact with opposing counsel, judges and agency officers, knowledge that informs his point of view in personal practice.

Miller later moved into personal practice and now works at Lackey & Miller, LLC. At the firm he advocates for clients inside New Jersey’s legal system, drawing on his background in public-sector regulation. His work consists of courtroom appearances and written advocacy, in addition to counseling clients on procedural and statutory matters. He speaks plainly and objectives to make clear the stakes for the ones he advocates for.

Outside of casework he continues to comply with developments in state law intently. He reads opinions and administrative rulings, and he treats precedent as a realistic tool instead of abstract authority. That attitude shapes how he prepares arguments and how he advises clients about danger, timing and probably outcomes.

He stays licensed to practice in New Jersey and keeps an office through Lackey & Miller, LLC. His current practice focuses on matters springing up under New Jersey regulation.
