About Brian

Brian McEwing built a profession that bridges the practical world of maritime operations and the technical needs of admiralty law. He earned a B.S. in Political Science from Rutgers University–Camden in 1995 and returned to the same campus for his J.D., which he acquired in 2003. Those educational years bookend a period of hands-on work at the water and study in the classroom.

Early in his career he served as Port Captain for the Delaware River and Bay Authority’s Cape May Ferry in 2002. That role put him at the the front lines of vessel operations, safety oversight and day-to-day logistics. He later entered personal practice and labored as an attorney at Donna Adelsberger & Associates beginning in 2008. Three years after that move he have become a companion at Reeves McEwing LLP in 2011, a position he has held while increasing a tradition rooted in maritime law. He maintains an office in Philadelphia.

McEwing is licensed to practice in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and he is also authorized to appear earlier than the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He holds the Proctor in Admiralty certification thru the Maritime Law Association and has been a proctor member of that association since 2008. The proctor credential and his operational background tell his work on cases that contain vessel operations, admiralty procedure and related regulatory matters.

His involvement in professional and regulatory our bodies runs parallel to his private practice. He has served as a commissioner on the New Jersey Maritime Pilot Commission since 2013, a role that places him within the regulatory conversation about pilotage and harbor protection. He has additionally served as a trustee of the Cape May County Bar Association since 2012. Those roles provide him regular exposure to the intersection of maritime law, local practice concerns and bar governance.

In the workplace he handles litigation and advisory work that touches maritime operations, admiralty claims and regulatory compliance. He draws on experience from both his years at sea and his years in courtroom to deal with disputes that range from vessel incidents to licensing and administrative matters. He also handles appeals in federal judiciary when cases proceed past trial.

McEwing balances practice, expert service and regulatory engagement. He advocates for clients from vessel operators to local entities and continues to practice maritime and admiralty law at Reeves McEwing LLP in the Philadelphia office.
